Stakeholder Workshop on Animal Feeding Studies and Alternative in-vitro Studies

The Draft Study Plan of 90-day animal feeding trials with GM maize and approaches using alternative methods (analytical, in-vitro and in-silico studies) was discussed at a workshop held in Vienna on 3 – 4 December 2012. The discussions focused on the design, conduct and analysis of the 90-day animal feeding trials. Possible options and constraints for animal studies with extended time frame and the choice and designs of the in-vitro approaches were discussed as well. The comments received were considered for advancing and finalising the study plans.

The consultation followed a two-step procedure (participation at a two-day workshop followed by the possibility for stakeholders to submit written comments).

This consultation was open to all stakeholders working on GMO risk assessment as well as professional risk assessors, risk managers, members of the academia and interested parties. A first announcement was circulated by e-mail to a large number of representatives from stakeholder organisations. Respondents subsequently received the workshop agenda and a summary of the respective Work Packages. Individuals interested but not able to attend were considered for written comments in the second step.

44 persons (including GRACE project team members) participated in the workshop. Written comments were received from 16 stakeholder organisations or individuals resp.
