WP3: Review of food, feed and health impacts of GM crops
The information landscape on the health effects of GM crops is still very fragmented. Users have to extract information from various databases, websites and reports published by public authorities, initiatives and NGOs (e.g. ICGEB, CERA-GMC, GM Crop Approval Database, EUginius, OECD BioTrack, Biosafety Clearing-House, RIKILT and BVL initiatives, EFSA, JRC, IPTC, DG RES, USDA, FAS).
The objective of Work Package 3 (WP3) is to compile all relevant scientific results from published literature and the publicly accessible databases listed above to build a complete, highly informative database for the food and feed safety assessment of GM crops. Additionally, databases with hitherto unpublished data (e.g. SCAR, CWG, GMI research database, CORDIS) will be included to gain insight into ongoing research activities on GM crops that have not yet been approved.
The first step will involve identifying, clustering and categorizing the literature and data to be reviewed by the review teams on the basis of the Good Review Practice criteria established in WP8. Criteria that may be used to sort the data include
- the relevance of this data for a particular field;
- the type of health effect reported;
- the experimental design and methodology used with specific focus on in vitro studies, in vivo feeding experiments, in silico studies and “omics” analyses of GM plants and derived products such as proteins;
- categorization criteria and guidelines already implemented by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) for the risk assessment of GM plants.
At the same time, the collected data sets will be evaluated by external experts in a transparent review process to critically analyse the current approaches used in biosafety research on GM plants. All conclusions and recommendations derived from these reviews, including a detailed map of the evidence and the criteria used for the quality assessment, will be communicated to the public and stakeholders via the GRACE website.
The database CADIMA (Central Access Database for Impact Assessment of Crop Genetic Improvement Technologies) contains quality assessed studies and conclusions on the health effects, socio-economic consequences and environmental impacts of GM plants as well as raw data of animal feeding studies and alternative in vitro approaches.
